The Music That Unites Us and Breaks Down Borders

Art, when shared from the heart, has the power to transform spaces and bring people together beyond their differences. That’s exactly what happened last Friday at El Pinar, where music once again became a bridge, a refuge, and a celebration. (Read more...)

We experienced one of those afternoons that stays with you, etched deep in the heart. At the El Pinar center, as part of the music workshops for integration that Marea Viva holds with young migrants, the visit from the association Impertinent Monkeys —led by the inspiring Ceferino, or just “Cefe”— turned the day into an unforgettable celebration.

From the very first chord, you could feel it in the air: something special was about to happen. The guitar, the songs, the drums, the smiles, bodies in motion, the pulse of reggae… everything began to vibrate on the same frequency. As more and more young people arrived, the space filled with a pure, contagious energy. There were no differences, no backgrounds, no labels. Just people sharing music, joy, and freedom.

There was dancing —so much dancing— laughter, and an overwhelming enthusiasm from the young migrants, who couldn’t stop moving and enjoying every moment. And when it all came to an end, one phrase said it all: “We were left wanting more.”

The connection between Marea Viva and Impertinent Monkeys flowed effortlessly, as if they had always been walking this path together. They share a powerful vision: that art is a universal language, capable of building bridges, healing wounds, and weaving community.

For over three hours, Cefe gave it his all. His voice, his rhythm, his closeness… each song was a gift. Blending original tracks with improvised moments, he made everyone feel part of something bigger. And in the end, he shared a few spontaneous words of thanks that touched everyone present.

I felt at home,” he later said. “The format works so well, and the kids really get to let loose.” And he was right: in that small but mighty space, the kids could simply be themselves — express freely, feel free.

From Marea Viva, we want to express our deepest thanks. To Cefe, for his honest dedication. To Impertinent Monkeys, for their generosity and connection. We truly hope this was just the first of many shared experiences. Because integration isn’t declared — it’s built in moments like this, when music reminds us that, deep down, we all dance to the same rhythm.

Endless thanks for a magical afternoon. Until next time… with instruments tuned and hearts wide open.
