The Tama Project

Music for Integration

About Our Project

Our project focuses on using music as a tool for the integration of migrants through a weekly workshop that already brings together over 50 participants and is supported by 6 dedicated volunteers. Through music, we promote intercultural exchange, healthy recreation, and emotional well-being—strengthening community cohesion and improving the mood and quality of life of those who take part.

The TAMA Project is a commitment to integration through rhythm and intercultural exchange.

In a world that often turns its back on those forced to leave their homes, some initiatives show that empathy, creativity, and music can build bridges where there was once only distance. That’s the heart of the TAMA Project – Music for Inclusion, an initiative led by the Marea Viva Bahía de Cádiz Association in collaboration with CEAR (Spanish Commission for Refugee Aid), placing migrants and refugees at the center of its mission. The project is based at the El Pinar Reception Center in Puerto Real.

Every Friday afternoon, this space transforms into a vibrant workshop where the rhythms of the flamenco cajón, the chords of the guitar, and the echo of drums blend with laughter, dancing, and diverse languages. It’s not about knowing music — it’s about living it. There are no formal lessons or exams, just encounters. People from different cultural and linguistic backgrounds come together, finding in music a shared language.

The goal is clear and powerful: to create a safe and welcoming space where people can express themselves, share, and feel part of a community. Music — that universal language — serves not only as a tool for integration, but also as medicine for the soul, especially for those who have endured difficult experiences.

This workshop offers more than entertainment and learning; it also helps participants improve their Spanish in a real, participatory context while strengthening emotional well-being. For the Marea Viva Association, the project is also a way to connect closely with residents, listen to their stories, and identify new needs — building together a path toward inclusion.

With simple materials, percussion instruments, shared songs, and a strong desire to participate, this weekly workshop becomes a space of joy and togetherness. All of this is made possible thanks to the dedication of our volunteers, the involvement of CEAR, and the commitment of those who believe that a fairer world begins by truly listening to one another.

As it grows and evolves, it embraces cultural outings and special group activities. Because integration isn’t just about being present — it’s about feeling like you belong.

This project, with a minimal budget and a huge human impact, reminds us that you don’t need vast resources to achieve great things. All it takes is passion, commitment, and humanity.

At Marea Viva, we continue to believe in music as a powerful tool for inclusion, and in each person as the protagonist of their own story. Because every drumbeat, every word shared, is one more step toward a society where no one feels like a stranger.
